A Reviewable OpenAI Codex Workflow for Coding Tasks

Use Codex for repository work with a clear goal, controlled permissions, reviewable diffs, and explicit verification criteria.

OpenAI Codex is a coding agent available through ChatGPT, the CLI, IDE integrations, and cloud workflows. It can understand repositories, make changes, review code, and address failures. It is most useful when the goal, repository context, and verification method are clear, rather than when it is asked to infer a product requirement from one sentence.

Describe an acceptable change

State the observed problem, relevant paths, expected behavior, interfaces that must remain stable, and the commands that should verify the result. Have the agent read repository instructions and related code, then restate the scope. Larger work can be divided into small commits or explicit stages so each part can be reviewed independently.

Control permissions and commands

Repository writes, network access, database migrations, and deployments carry different consequences. Grant only the access required for the task, and keep human approval around deletion, resets, production data, and publishing. Commands, dependency changes, and migration files generated by an agent need the same review as human-written work; successful execution is not proof of correctness.

Finish with the diff and evidence

Review whether the final diff stays within the requirement. Check error handling, security boundaries, and compatibility, then run the project's required build or tests. Any area that could not be verified should be named in the delivery note. Codex can reduce search and implementation time, while code ownership and release responsibility remain with the team.
